Label TextThe upper part of this ornament represents a raptor, probably a peregrine falcon, but its tail has been elongated to resemble a rattlesnake. Celestial birds and monstrous reptiles are used to represent the cosmic powers of Sky and the Underworld. Ceremonial objects made of sheet copper cut-outs were made for the ruling elite. The copper was traded and came from the Great Lakes region.ProvenancePrivate collection, Anderson County, Tennessee; private collection, USA; Jon C. Griffin, Columbia, South Carolina
