Label TextArgillite is a soft slate unique to Haida Gwaii. The slate is naturally grey but after finishing the carving the artist rubbed his fingers over the carving and natural oils and sweat from his hands created this highly polished surface. Totem poles became an important art form during the nineteenth century and finely carved models were made for collectors and tourists.Exhibition History"Art Des Indiens D'Amerique Du Nord Dans La Collection D'Eugene Thaw," Mona Bismarck Foundation, Paris, France, Somogy Editions D'Art, January 21, 2000 - March 18, 2000.
