Label TextStan Hill was a high steel worker for most of his life until, at age 55, he began carving bone—an all but lost Iroquois tradition. Hill’s bone and antler combs represent some of his most engaging work. The form and iconography of his combs are based on the work of his ancestors who made such carvings until the late 1700s. Hill has had a great impact on the art of contemporary carving.
