Label TextCarbon dating has determined that this woven tumpline is 700 to 1100 years old. Early Southwesterners used tumplines to carry loads on their backs. Tumplines were positioned on the forehead and stout tie-strings were fastened to the load. Weavers often painted or wove mineral or plant-dyed fibers into the tumplines to create geometric designs.
