Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852), prominent American landscape gardener and architect, wrote that a porch or veranda “ornamented by brackets” shelters the entrance door, and “affords an agreeable place…to enjoy a cool shaded seat in the hotter portions of the season.” Note the lacelike porch brackets carefully picked out by Vogt in this drawing. They are purely ornamental and are further emphasized by the simple lines of the cottage, and lack of abundant detail in the entire drawing.
Despite his prolific artistic activity, Vogt left behind very few records of his existence. This drawing may provide one Vogt signed it “Germ. Professor.” We are left wondering if he really gave lessons or just applied the title in jest.

Label TextWilliam Dempster (1832-1907) was born in Albany County and settled in Schoharie County in 1870. He was a farmer and later worked variously as a “laborer” or “day laborer.” According to the History of Schoharie County (1882), Dempster owned a “house and lot” in Sharon Springs, likely the building later depicted by Vogt in this drawing.Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852), prominent American landscape gardener and architect, wrote that a porch or veranda “ornamented by brackets” shelters the entrance door, and “affords an agreeable place…to enjoy a cool shaded seat in the hotter portions of the season.” Note the lacelike porch brackets carefully picked out by Vogt in this drawing.
