Frank M. Owens, the owner of this residence and store, worked as a “cheesemaker” at the Canajoharie Cheese Factory in 1875 and 1880. He then worked in the “Creamery Station” as a laborer in 1900 and manager in 1905. Creameries were sites of dairy processing, milk and cream bottling, and butter-making. The creamery here in Canajoharie was located at 75 Creek Street. The Canajoharie Cooperative Milk Producers constructed a modern building there in the 1950s, and remained in operation until the 1960s.
In 1892, Frank M. Owens listed his occupation as “grocer” undoubtedly referring to the store represented in this drawing. It is unclear if he was also working at the Creamery at that time. In the 1910 Federal Census, he listed his occupation as “farmer and merchant” stating that he ran a “chicken farm and General country Store” again undoubtedly referring to the store in this picture. A mix of household and other goods can be seen on display in the store windows.
