Label TextNavajo weaver Laverne Barber made this flag in honor of her uncle who served in the Vietnam War. Historically, Native Americans have served in the military at a higher rate than any other demographic and continue that tradition with 31,000 Native Americans currently on active duty, according to the Department of Defense. Barber’s weaving shows that her uncle's enlistment was a service to both America and the Navajo Nation.Exhibition History443: The Flag in American Indian Art, New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, NJ, August 30, 1997 - January 18, 1998; High Museum of Art, Atlanta GA.
