Label TextThis wooden sculpture, actually a weathervane pattern, is a hand carving used to create molds from which multiple copies could then be produced for commercial sale. The image of a determined trotter, with head lowered and tail extended, was popularized in the 1860s by the success of the famous trotter Dexter who was portrayed in a wide variety of media by American artists and draftsmen. Dexter also appears in a drawing, N0118.1961.
