Label TextMary Ann Carroll was born in Sandersville, Georgia and grew up in Fort Pierce, Florida. She always enjoyed drawing, but became interested in painting when she met Harold Newton, one of the first Highwaymen. She was the only woman of the group and while painting, raised seven children and worked numerous odd jobs. This painting depicts a singular palm tree surrounded by lush greenery and the inviting blue waters of the ocean. There are no beachgoers or boats on the waterline, giving the viewer an uninterrupted view of Florida’s beauty. Mary Ann painted for the entirety of her adult life, often offering the advice that, “you must believe in yourself, even if no one else does.”On View
