Label TextA self-proclaimed incurable optimist, Isidor Wiener came to the United States in 1903 to escape Jewish persecution in Romania. When his wife died in 1950, his son encouraged him to paint to relieve his grief. Wiener quickly became one of the most prominent folk artists of the 20th century, painting scenes of Eastern Europe, his Jewish heritage, Biblical stories, and his life in New York City. He was successful in translating personal values, impressions, and inspirations into paintings that hold universal appeal. On View
