Label TextThis portrait of an unidentified woman is painted with the loose, fluid brush strokes, gray shading, and bold, dark outlines that mark Powers' early style. As in many of his portraits of adult subjects, the artist rendered the seated figure close to the picture plane in a three-quarter length pose. Powers' interest in costume details is evident in the attention paid to the sheer fichu and large white cap. Her hands, folded in her lap, lighten the lower half of the picture and serve to balance the composition.
