Label TextMary Shelley is a folk carver from Ithaca, New York. She earned a degree in English from Cornell University and is a practicing social worker. She works in topical series such as cows, dogs and diners. Sullivan’s Diner IV is the fourth in a series of works carved of Sullivan’s Diner in Horseheads, New York. Shelley said of her diner series, “I originally started doing pictures of diners and restaurants because I was fascinated with them as places where people, isolated during the rest of their day, could come together just to ‘be’ and feel a sense of instant belonging.”
