Label TextWith revenue from portraits declining due to the rise of photography, Prior turned to other subjects to supplement his income from the 1850s onward. Pastoral landscapes were popular and Prior turned out competent, if imaginary, images in the style of the day. This scene with fisherman casting their lines under wizened trees on the banks of a mirror-like body of water dotted with sailing vessels, is typical of these works.
