Label TextPennell was in France in 1889, sketching a series of etchings of what he called, “The devils of Notre Dame,” the gargoyles that decorate the cathedral’s façade. Not only can we interpret this character study of the gargoyle as an examination of architecture, but also of unique perspectives, Pennell is viewing the Parisian cityscape as the gargoyles do, from a bird’s eye vantage. The tower of Sainte-Jacques dominates the skyline, drawing attention to the lone hot-air balloon floating above the city, the church of Sacré-Cœur faintly visible in the distance. On View
