Label TextSister Gertrude Morgan was a self-taught African American poet, street preacher, musician and folk artist who received critical recognition for her artwork during her lifetime. She experienced several religious revelations between 1934 and 1956, the last urging her to paint in the service of the Lord’s work she had been doing with children and in her street ministry in New Orleans. Dressed in white as a Bride of Christ, Sister Morgan painted religious subject matter almost exclusively, illustrating scenes from the scripture and the Book of Revelation.
