Label TextCarvers of nineteenth century cigar store figures produced large-scale wooden sculptures of American allegories and characters to stand outside tobacco shops as advertisements. The earliest cigar figures were 20-30 inches and made to stand on tabletops, but as demand grew for the carvings, so did their size. The inspiration for the figures came from sixteenth century images of the New World; including fur trappers, Indigenous peoples, and stereotypes of European immigrants.
