Label TextVedder is best known for his Egyptian scenes, which can be found in numerous museum collections. Here he depicts a nocturnal view of Tel el-Armana—an extensive ancient Egyptian archaeological site containing the remains of what was the capital city during the late Eighteenth Dynasty.

Vedder’s inscription on the back of the canvas reads, “Old Tree on the way to Tel el Armana—modern graves in foreground—attempt at moonlight,” confirming both the location and the nocturnal hour of the painting.
