Label TextSimeon Skillen, Jr. was the foremost Boston ship carver of his day. Coming from a large family of ship carvers in Boston, Massachusetts, Skillen was regularly hired to carve ship figureheads and shop signs, architectural garden sculptures and ornamental sculpture for furniture. Apollo, the Greek god of music, poetry, prophecy, and medicine, probably served as a library ornament for someone well-versed in classical antiquity.
