Label TextThis pipe was popular among the Lakota in the late 19th century. The stem’s relief carving depicts an elk, turtle, and buffalo. The remainder is wrapped with red and white plaited quillwork. A tuft of red-dyed horsehair and a piece of birdskin with feathers are attached at the center. A number of stems made by this artist are known, and most have similar figures. They may refer to virtues associated with these particular animals; the elk as a symbol for love, the turtle for steadfastness, the buffalo as the provider of all things needed for life. The catlinite or pipestone head is of a standard type made post-1860.
