Label TextThese elegantly carved goggles have a distinct raised brow and inverted whale’s tail nose. These goggles may have been used like masks at ceremonies where songs and stories dramatically recounted the different forces in Alaskan Native life. Masks helped enact transformations between humans or animals or to animate the many unseen spirits of the natural world.Exhibition History"Gifts from the Ancestors: Ancient Ivories of the Bering Strait," Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, September 29, 2009 - January 6, 2010.
