Label TextIncorporated in 1796, the Cherry Valley Academy was the first academy built west of the Hudson River. It flourished under the early leadership of Eliphalet Nott (177301866) who later served as president of Union College (1804-1866). The all-male Academy “enjoyed great prosperity during the early half of the [nineteenth] Century.” It operated as the Cherry Valley Female Academy from 1850 until 1875, and was called “one of the most fashionable schools for girls in its time.” That building later operated as the Grand Hotel, with a “handsome fountain” on its grounds, until it was lost to a fire in 1894.

Despite the lack of title by Vogt, anecdotal evidence suggests that the building in this drawing had served as a lodging house for Female Academy teachers.
