Label TextNavajo women from the Chinle area of Arizona are known for the subtle choice of colors in their weavings. The neutral tan, brown and gray dyes heighten the intensity of the six American flags, making them stand out in the design. The pattern relates to the traditional stripes used by Navajo weavers for chief blankets, such as those in the Thaw Gallery. Navajo rugs became very popular with the American public when the Santa Fe Railway opened the Southwest to a tourist trade.
