Label TextRecent scholarship has identified this basket as the work of Mary Dick Topino. Topino created designs representing human figures or cross motifs, producing the patterns of black-dyed bracket fern root and redbud shoots. Her sewing strands show careful attention to sizing, and her stitching is invariably neat and even, with an average of 8 to 9 coils per vertical inch and 10 stitches per horizontal inch. Mrs. Topino’s baskets are among the highest quality work produced by Yokuts weavers.
