Label TextRecent scholarship has identified this basket as the work of Mary Dick Topino. Topino created designs representing human figures or cross motifs, producing the patterns of black-dyed bracket fern root and redbud shoots. Her sewing strands show careful attention to sizing, and her stitching is invariably neat and even, with an average of 8 to 9 coils per vertical inch and 10 stitches per horizontal inch. Mrs. Topino’s baskets are among the highest quality work produced by Yokuts weavers.BibliographyVincent, Gilbert et al. Art of the North American Indians: The Thaw Collection.
