Label TextAlfred Jacob Miller was born in Baltimore, Maryland and studied with the portrait painter Thomas Sully. In 1837, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and was hired by the Scottish adventurer William Drummond Steward to join and record his journey to the Rocky Mountains, where Western fur trappers and Native Americans met to exchange their furs and goods. When Miller returned to New Orleans a year later, he began making oil paintings from his travel sketches. He is best known for these earlier works showing Native Americans and fur traders in the American West, capturing a fascinating moment in American history.
