Label TextIn 1787 the James Averells settled on a farm in the Cooperstown area. They moved into town in 1792 when James exchanged his land for John Husband's Tannery on Lake Street just east of Chestnut Street. The following year, the wings were added to the central structure and the house became known as Averell Cottage. James was born in 1763 and died in 1835. He is buried in Presbyterian Churchyard in Cooperstown.
