Label TextSamuel Nelson was a judge of the sixth circuit (1823-1831); an associate justice of the state supreme court (1831-1837); chief justice of the state supreme court (1837-1845; and associate justice of the United States Supreme Court (1845-1872) He was one of Cooperstown's most famous residents in the nineteenth century.
