Label TextThis painting depicts a residence in Cooperstown situated on a bluff along the Susquehanna River. It was built in 1800, by Richard Fenimore Cooper, the older brother of James Fenimore Cooper. John A. Dix, a governor of New York was the next owner, and Levi C. Turner bought it from him in 1833 and owned the house until 1839, when it was bought by George A. Starkweather. Edward Clark bought the site in 1856, moved to the upper end of Main Street and erected a new mansion, named Fernleigh. The north wing of this mansion still stands. In this painting, Rossiter depicts Apple Hill and the bridge in the foreground closer together than they actually are. Rossiter painted "Apple Hill" sometime in the late 1830s when the residence was owned by Levi Turner.
