Vogt used rulers and drawing tools in order to produce evenly spaced straight lines and precise angles. However, he frequently distorted perspectives in order to show additional planes and details. Here Vogt “winged out” the right side of the church allowing him to capture the side windows, foundation, and roof details. In reality, this church is not the long rectangle that Vogt drew, but is much squatter and appears to hug the ground.
The first known drawings by Vogt are of churches. It may be that he turned to churches and their members for support when he first arrived in the area, producing drawings as thanks for room and board. The earliest known drawings by Vogt were done in graphite pencil alone; he did not start using colored pencils until 1893. Dutch Reformed Church, Sharon Hill, NY exhibited here is the only known drawing of a church in color.
