Label TextMatthew Campbell was the son of Colonel Samuel Campbell, a pivotal leader in New York during the Revolutionary War. Colonel Campbell was commander of the Tryon County Militia, which drew its members from a region including Cherry Valley and present-day Cooperstown. Because of his military status, his fortified house was a target of British and Indian raiders in 1778. His wife Jane and children Elinor, James, Matthew, and Samuel were taken captive during the attack. They were later returned as part of a prisoner exchange. The family record features a variety of Masonic symbols as well as the traditional hearts and vines.
