Label TextThe following is a description of the fire depicted in this painting written by Smagorinsky: "Last August (1988) in the middle of the night, a fire broke out in an apartment above Pizza Pizza. Sixty people, mostly migrant families and college students had to be evacuated. Fortunately, everyone escaped. The fire house is around the corner and the men responded quickly but the fire had already gone through the roof. Several fire companies responded. The fire was also fought from the back. I talked to one of the fire chiefs and a couple of firemen before doing this painting so I could try to be as exact as I could." On View
