Label TextThis likeness is one of only a few portraits drawn by James Sanford Ellsworth depicting subjects who are believed to have lived in New York state. A pleasing sense of pattern and design is created as the artist skillfully employed line and color to render the subject's striped dress and shawl in shades of blue and rose. The pink paper visually complements the picture and is one of several paper colors he employed. The artist's inclusion of both hands is unusual for his profile work. Only one other example is known to exist.Exhibition History"The Paintings of James Sanford Ellsworth, Itinerant Folk Artist, 1802-1873," Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, Williamsburg, VA, October 13, 1974 - December 1, 1974.
