Label TextThe charcoal-colored background in this portrait of Jennie Post is an unusual departure for Ellsworth. The artist successfully lightened the portrait by detailing a white scalloped lace collar and skillfully modeled white cap to separate the face from the dark background. The hand that holds a hymnal book is also highlighted, thus drawing attention to the lower portion of the picture and balancing the composition.Exhibition History"The Paintings of James Sanford Ellsworth, Itinerant Folk Artist, 1802-1873," Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, Williamsburg, VA, October 13, 1974 - December 1, 1974.
