In 1907, Wicker’s time at the Académie came to an end and her husband, Charles joined her and Walter in Paris. From there the Wickers travelled north to Holland before visiting Spain and North Africa. The inscription on the back of the piece names the location of this scene as Dounarenez, Brittany. The building with the arched entryway to the left of the composition is still stands and serves as a marketplace known as Les Halles de Dounarenez. The church spire seen in the distance belongs to L'Église de Sacré-Cœur.

Label TextMary Hackney Wicker grew up in Aurora Illinois and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. between 1906 and 1907, Mary moved to Paris along with her son Walter to study and the Académie Julian, a private school that was popular with American artists looking to further their artistic education in Paris. Wicker enrolled in one of the Académie’s studios for women, which charged twice the fee of the studios for male students and offered half of the instruction. She continued to develop her skills in the academic tradition of painting while also becoming familiar with the impressionist style that had first been exhibited in France in the 1870s. In 1907, Wicker’s time at the Académie came to an end and her husband, Charles joined her and Walter in Paris.
