Label TextClementine Hunter is one of the best known 20th-century folk artists. A descendant of slaves, Hunter spent the majority of her life on Melrose Plantation in Louisiana. Hunter's art was inspired by her plantation life. She depicted plantation hands at work, at church, and at play, as well as floral still lifes, and portraiture. Hunter's early works were brought to the attention of François Mignon, a writer, and James Register, a professor at the University of Oklahoma. From the beginning, both men encouraged her work, and they arranged for her first public show in 1946. From then on, Hunter became increasingly well known.
