Label TextAlmira H. Montgomery Mapes lived in Lodi, New York, with her husband James, who was a merchant. Together they had four daughters, three of whom died in infancy, although a fourth child, Frances, lived to adulthood. At the time that this portrait was drawn, Almira was only thirty-eight years old. However, the gaunt appearance of her face suggests a sickly disposition; her eyes seem heavy, cheeks sunken and her overall condition somewhat frail. Amira died on May 5, 1845, only a few years after this portrait was drawn.Exhibition History“Henry Walton, 19th Century American Artist,” Ithaca College Museum of Art, Ithaca, NY, December 9, 1968 – January 4, 1969; Herbert F.
