Label TextGrowing up in Puerto Rico, Gregorio Marzan worked in the sugarcane fields and then as a carpenter in his adult years. By 1937 he had saved enough money to move to New York City, where his family later joined him. Marzan worked for a toy company on a production line and made small figurines in his free time during those years. After his retirement, he began to create larger figures from found objects. As an artist, Marzan celebrates his New York home with distinctly American symbols such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.
