Label TextSubtle aesthetics often characterize the artistry of Chumash basket making. This design features a horizontal band that encircles the upper area of the basket and alternating short and long bands that flow towards the basket’s center. Chumash baskets are remarkably lightweight for their size because juncas stems that form the basket’s coil foundations are hollow. Baskets such as this one were used for the preparation of meals and as winnowing trays to separate chaff from seeds.ProvenancePrivate collection, California; Donald Ellis Gallery, Dundas, Ontario
