Label TextLarge, shallow bowls or trays were originally used for winnowing or parching seeds, but since the turn of the century they have been made to sell to collectors and tourists (c.f. Whiteford 1988, pl.7; Tanner 1982, fig.4.8). They are worked from right to left with coils of three bunched rods or withes, and sewn with narrow splints of willow or cottonwood. The designs of black devil's claw and red yucca root are usually said to have little or no symbolism, but the irregularity in the spacing of the figures in the outer circle and also in the central red and black star is common in Apache work. Such spacing rarely occurs in the closely related Yavapai baskets. Many Western Apache baskets have petalled figures and/or many-pointed stars at their center. This specimen is unusually dark in color, possibly because of weathering or staining. (From the Catalog of the Thaw Collection of American Indian Art, 2nd ed.)
