Label TextThe Akimel O'odham are well-known for their finely made coiled basketry. This large basket is coiled and made of a cattail foundation with willow splints for warp and strips of devil's claw used to create the energetic maze design. The rim is finished with a traditional herringbone weave. The materials must be collected at the proper time of year and selected carefully, then be prepared by splitting, trimming, and shaving to the proper thickness. Then they are soaked for a time, allowing them to bend properly.
