Label TextSubtle aesthetics often characterize the artistry of Chumash basketmaking. The woman who wove this basket created a symmetrical design using warm, earth-toned colors of black dyed juncas and white sumac to define her design elemts, while the deep golden juncas acts as the background. Her design features a horizontal band that encircles the upper area of the basket that flows towards the basket's center. Chumash baskets are remarkably lightweight for their size because the juncas stems that form the basket's coil foundations are hollow. The Chumash used basin-shaped coiled baskets such as this one for the preparation of meals but by 1880, because of the appreciation of Chumash weaving, what was once utilitarian ware became presentation gifts.
