Label TextWomen's leggings of the Central Plains consisted of rectangular sheets of tanned skin that were wrapped around the lower part of the leg and sewn closed or tied with thongs like this pair. They were held up by means of garters below the knee. Cowhide was used as a substitute for buffalo or elk skin in the early Reservation period. Adopted as a symbol of courage and power, the American flag is waving in all directions on these leggings. It has replaced the symbolic designs relating to a man's war honors which often decorated his wife's leggings in former times. Beautifully decorated garments such as these leggings were made to be worn at Fourth of July celebrations. The use of metallic beads on these leggings was popular between 1885 and 1895. Decorated leggings were usually worn with moccasins beaded in the same pattern. (From the Catalog of the Thaw Collection of American Indian Art, 2nd ed.)
