Label TextThe American flag is a carefully integrated design element on this pair of moccasins. Although flag imagery became common in Sioux beadwork in the late 19th century, traditional Sioux symbolism also remained important. The stepped pyramids on the sides are said to represent mountains, and the smaller pyramids represent tipis. The two elongated elements in green beadwork represent buffalo tracks. They likely refer to the wearer’s spiritual association with the buffalo.Exhibition HistoryMuseum of Our National Heritage, Lexington, MA, December 6, 1994 - May 2, 1995.
