Label TextIn this battle scene, a Kiowa warrior pursues two Ute enemies, one on a red horse and the other on a blue horse. His lance strikes one of them in the chest, likely a mortal blow. The Kiowa’s sky-blue pants might be army issue since some Kiowa warriors captured army clothing in battle and wore them with their traditional clothing to symbolize military prowess. The written inscription underneath this particular warrior, which identifies him as Cheyenne, is incorrect. Non-Natives often wrote inscriptions on drawings at a later date in the attempt to describe the imagery.
