Label TextThis is a preliminary sketch for the painting by the same name, number N0407.55. It shows how Clonney enhanced the drama of the scene by removing the dog, adding two more attentive spectators, simplifying the background, and backing off from the figures. An interesting alteration is the replacement of the slat-back chair by the door in the sketch with the somewhat incongruous Queen Anne side chair.
