Label TextPrentiss was an important and leading figure in the history of Cooperstown. A descendant of an early Connecticut family, Prentiss came to Cooperstown in 1808 to a position on "The Impartial Observer," Judge William Cooper's newspaper with an avowedly conservative outlook. Opponents quickly termed it "The Imp." In 1809, Cooper sold out to Prentiss who changed the name to "The Cooperstown Federalist." Selling the paper in 1817, Prentiss bought it back the following year and renamed it "The Freeman's Journal," the name that survives to this day. As well as being editor until 1859, Prentiss served two terms in Congress and was president of the Second National Bank, a productive and well-respected resident of Cooperstown. On View
