Label TextLambdin, a great favorite in his own day, pleased Victorian audiences with the diversity of his subject matter. His work included studies of young women, Civil War subjects, and still life paintings in addition to genre. As a sentimental painter, Lambdin's genre scenes were anecdotal but included few expressive gestures. Music and Refreshments is one such example where mood substitutes for action.
