Label TextThe only known painting by the artist Albertus D. Whitney, this portrait of A. Huggins is rendered in an artistic shorthand that evinces a simplistic interpretation of the subject's appearance. Using a rather limited palette, Whitney painted the sitter's suit in black, the background in brown, and the drapery-like elements flanking Huggins in shades of brown with vertical lines of highlighted color. The pinched brow, bushy eyebrows, long nose and tightly pursed lips are features possibly more distinctive of the artist's hand than a revealing likeness of the sitter.BibliographyPaul S.
