Label TextWilliam Hawkins depicted animals and the buildings of Columbus, Ohio, in a bold, expressionistic style. He had painted casually since the 1930s and then pursued art full-time after his retirement. In this painting Hawkins deviates from the standard depiction of the American eagle by incorporating the stars and stripes into the wings, and by painting a rose on the eagle’s beak. He included the inscription indicating his place of birth (Kentucky) and birth date into nearly all his paintings. On View
