Label TextWilliam Hallowell was a physician in Norristown, Pennsylvania, until about 1876, after which he advertised himself as a dentist. Although there is no documentation that he taught penmanship, his skill in the medium is evident in this rendering of a sleeping lady. The inscription shows Hallowell’s pride in his workmanship and implies a fondness for the Roberts family, to whom this piece was presented. Hallowell was, like Edward Hicks, a prominent Quaker, and it is possible that Roberts and his family were also Quakers who extended some courtesy to the artist/doctor.On View
